GLOBALFOUNDRIES Names Eric Choh New General Manager of Fab 8: Takes over as head of company’s new $4.6 billion wafer fabrication facility

GLOBALFOUNDRIES today announced Eric Choh has been named vice president and interim general manager of the new Fab 8 facility currently under construction at the Luther Forest Technology Campus in Saratoga County, New York. Choh, who previously served as vice president of operations for Fab 8, takes over leadership responsibilities for Fab 8 from Norm Armour who has decided to accept another position outside the company.  Reporting to KC Ang, senior vice president, 300mm Fab Operations, Choh is based at the Fab 8 facility in New York.

“This is an exciting time for GLOBALFOUNDRIES as we grow our business around the world and continue to develop our local operations at Fab 8. Eric Choh has been a key member of our management team since the formation of GLOBALFOUNDRIES in March 2009 and we are excited that he will be leading our new operations at Fab 8 in New York,” said GLOBALFOUNDRIES CEO Ajit Manocha.  “We thank Norm Armour for his leadership and contributions to the Fab 8 project and to GLOBALFOUNDRIES and we wish him all the best in his new role.”

Choh joined GLOBALFOUNDRIES in March 2009 from AMD where he served as vice president of Advanced Process Development. In this role, Choh was responsible for driving new process module development activities with IBM Alliance partners to support overall technology and product requirements. Choh joined AMD in 1993 and held several key leadership positions including helping to start-up operations at the Fab 25 facility in Austin, TX and as director of operations from start-up to full ramp at the AMD Fab 30 facility, now the GLOBALFOUNDRIES Fab 1 facility, in Dresden, Germany. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland and a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.

Today, GLOBALFOUNDRIES has approximately 930 employees working at the Fab 8 facility and plans to increase local recruiting efforts and grow to approximately 1,400 employees by the end of next year as the facility ramps up to full production. GLOBALFOUNDRIES has already expanded the project several times since originally breaking ground on the main fab building in June 2009. In 2010, GLOBALFOUNDRIES expanded the size of the manufacturing cleanroom from 210,000 square feet to 300,000 square feet and in June of this year, the company broke ground on a second office building which is expected to be ready in August 2012.
